Summary

DEPARTMENT:      Juvenile Court

ENTRY SALARY:   $27.16 per hour, plus benefits

JOB SUMMARY:    This position is responsible for enforcing Georgia compulsory attendance requirements for enrolled students and for investigating juvenile crimes. Receives and investigates complaints regarding delinquent children, children in need of services and dependent children; reviews and evaluates juvenile complaints, police incident reports, and case file transfer documents; determines if jurisdiction exists; interviews parents, witnesses, complainants, school personnel and social agencies and determines an appropriate course of action. Receives, reviews, prepares, and processes a variety of documents and related information for review and use in trial preparation. Determines appropriate court procedures, such as formal hearings, pleas, trials, diversion, withdrawals/dismissals, warnings, mental health evaluations, or other appropriate court action; consults with parents, school personnel, attorneys, juveniles, and others to explain court processes and procedures and to gather information; recommends detention, negotiations, amended charges, and/or dispositional or sentencing alternatives to the court. Performs related administrative and legal tasks; develops and maintains truancy statistics. Acts as liaison between Juvenile Court, the Walton County Board of Education, and the Social Circle Department of Education. Develops and implements programs to decrease recidivism for truancy offenders. Prepares and delivers community education to the public. Processes detention or release as directed; takes custody of and detains children under the supervision of the Court as appropriate or as required under the conditions of probation; schedules detention hearings and attends court hearings as required. Assists in the research, preparation, and submission of grant proposals and reports that support department goals; maintains records and submits reports related to grant opportunities. Administers awarded grants; reconciles and monitors grant budgets and grant performance; analyzes and processes funding and expenditures; enters data into automated accounting systems; identifies problems and makes recommendations for adjustments and solutions; works with department staff to implement corrective actions as necessary; maintains documentation of all submitted and awarded grants in accordance with local, state, and federal record retention guidelines. Prepares and maintains related records and documents; enters case data and information, notes, assessments, etc. into case management system; drafts legal documents for initiation of court proceedings; researches, organizes, and prepares cases for court hearings. Performs related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field. Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, juvenile justice, social work, or a related preferred. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
