Position Summary:
Reporting to the Sustainability, Waste, and Beautification Director, the Environmental Program Manager is responsible for planning, implementing, and maintaining programs, initiatives, and services designed to foster environmental sustainability, promote waste reduction, safeguard natural resources, and enhance the aesthetic character and overall quality of life for Mableton residents.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Develop innovative programs and outreach materials that educate the community about current environmental initiatives and expand access to resources, tools, and information to promote community sustainability.
• Facilitate sustainability events such as Arbor Day, Earth Day, Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection, Bulky Waste amnesty collection, and America Recycles Day.
• Work with the Sustainability Director to design and establish a Keep Mableton Beautiful affiliate organization.
• Plan and facilitate youth and adult workshops, outdoor recreation classes, and innovative programs that elevate environmental awareness and hands-on learning.
• Assist with the oversight of the City’s municipal solid waste and recycling program to ensure ordinance compliance, high resident satisfaction, and alignment with industry best practices.
• Help lead grant efforts by identifying worthwhile opportunities that support community beautification, environmental sustainability, and natural resources.
• Identify and maintain various environmental certifications such as the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Green Communities program and the National Wildlife Federation’s Community Wildlife Habitat.
• Work with the Communications Department to develop a social media presence for the Sustainability Office and Keep Mableton Beautiful.
• Work effectively, efficiently, and in collaboration with supervisors, co-workers,
assigned committees, community partners and organizations, frontline community
leaders, and the general public.
• Coordinate with and support various City departments to ensure efficient and
effective implementation of municipal sustainability programs and policies.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Natural Resource Management, Public Administration, or a related field; supplemented by two (2) years of professional experience in environmental programming, waste management, community outreach, or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Must have flexibility to attend meetings, programs or other needs on evenings and weekends.
- Proficiency in Google Suite, and other relevant software.
- Valid Georgia Class C driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree preferred. An equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge and understanding of the principles of environmental sustainability and the ability to apply these principles to municipal initiatives. Topics include solid waste management, recycling and waste reduction, tree preservation, litter prevention and beautification, water and energy conservation, and similar environmental subjects.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and facilitate environmental education programs and resources, and an understanding of the principles of effective outreach and engagement.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to respond courteously, tactfully, and effectively to public concerns and complaints.
- Experience with the principles and practices of municipal government administration, operations, and management.
- Project management skills to coordinate both long-term plans and short-term projects or initiatives across focus areas.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, be versatile, work independently with general supervision, and assume responsibility for the timely completion of work.
- Ability and experience maintaining effective working relationships while managing change, resolving conflicts and building consensus at all levels of the organization and with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to incorporate the perspectives of multiple communities in the consideration of impacts and outcomes of a decision-making process.
- Ability and willingness to attend evening meetings and weekend events.
- Advanced familiarity with Google workspace, internet media platforms, and relevant design software pertaining to the development of compelling outreach and educational material and campaigns.
- Ability to work in a team environment and maintain effective working relationships with other employees; be consistent in dealing with people; actively listen and be sensitive to others concerns, with or without being directly involved.
- Must be willing to take initiative, be dependable, maintain a positive attitude and represent the organization in a professional, courteous manner.
