Planning Technician / Planner of the Day (POD)
Overview
The Planning Technician is the friendly front line of our Planning & Zoning team—helping residents, businesses, and colleagues navigate the rules that keep our city running smoothly. This entry-level role blends customer service, administrative work, and occasional professional planning tasks. On any given day, you could be reviewing zoning applications, answering public inquiries, preparing maps, or assisting with community planning projects. You’ll also serve as the “Planner of the Day,” meaning you’ll be the go-to person for daily inquiries. This person will report to the Planning & Zoning Manager and has no direct reports. This role is a full-time, non-exempt hourly position.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide technical assistance and information to staff and the public on planning program areas and ordinances
• Review applications for compliance with development standards
• Prepare zoning certification letters, process business license applications, and issue temporary sign permits
• Research planning issues and compile data from multiple sources
• Prepare maps, charts, and tables of limited complexity
• Assist with public notices and property owner verifications
• Conduct occasional site inspections for zoning compliance
• Attend public meetings (including occasional evenings)
• Support major projects like the Comprehensive Plan, Community Work Program, Capital Improvement Element updates, and CDBG compliance
• Deliver excellent customer service in person, by phone, and by email
• Manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines
What You Will Need
• Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Construction Management, Geography, Social Sciences, or related field (post-graduate degree a plus)
• At least one year of relevant experience in plan review, zoning administration, or comprehensive planning preferred
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and basic GIS applications
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills to explain rules clearly and gather information effectively
• Ability to read and review plans for compliance with ordinances and codes
• Capacity to work on multiple projects simultaneously, independently or as part of a team
• Valid Georgia driver’s license with good driving history
