Jail Administrator


Summary

The Jail Administrator is responsible for the planning, organizing and implementation of jail facility operations and programs; to ensure the safety and security of facilities, inmates, employees and the public; The Jail Administrator is directly accountable to the Sheriff and Chief Deputy for the implementation of all Sheriffs’ orders and direction concerning the operation of the jail.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to guide jail staff in the day-to-day operations of the jail.
  • Ensure jail operations conform with state and federal laws.
  • Assists with the development and monitoring of the jail's annual budget.
  • Act as the agency's representative to or liaison with the inmate familty members or representatives, news media, and civil or business groups as directed by the Sheriff.
  • Colloborate with other law enforcement agencies, courts and related organizations to ensure effective operation of the jail.additional duties are listed on the job posting

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local policies, codes, laws, and regulations governing jail operations.
  • Knowledge of current corrections theories, policies, and best practices related to jail administration.
  • Knowledge of budget development principles and policies.
  • Ability to research complex issues and identify viable solutions.
  • Ability to serve as a liaison between the Sheriff's office and other County Offices/Departments as necessary.

Education, Training and Experience Requirements: A Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field.  Ten (10) years’ experience working in jail administration, including five (5) years supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experiences, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Certified Jail Manager Certification through the American Jail Association.
