JOB SUMMARY
This is general work, specifically related to non-emergency policing and law enforcement administrative duties. Work involves minimal personal danger, independent judgment, investigative skills, and problem solving in unusual situations. Duties include but are not limited to responding to non-emergency calls, citizen complaints, and a variety of additional law enforcement services. In addition, this work also involves educating the public on basic safety and crime prevention. This position reports to the ranking officer on duty.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The Powder Springs Police Department Public Safety Ambassador position serves three purposes.
1. The primary purpose of the Public Safety Ambassador is to provide the community of Powder Springs with a proficient and effective means of reporting specific incidents and requesting police services.
2. The secondary purpose of the Public Safety Ambassadors is designed to augment the uniformed patrol division by providing additional support, therefore relieving sworn officers from non-critical activities, while simultaneously increasing the patrol function.
3. The third and final purpose of the Public Safety Ambassador is to increase agency efforts towards building relationships, trust, and police legitimacy within the community by focusing on the traditional values of community policing.
Major Duties:
• Conduct Zone Patrols of Business, Neighborhoods, and Parks, and City Facilities, in an effort to augment the Powder Springs Police Department Mission Statement and maintain high visibility.
• Build relationships within the community of Powder Springs by maintaining high visibility and approachability to all citizens.
• Investigate private property motor vehicle accidents by establishing point of impact, interviewing witnesses, along with collecting, preserving, and packaging evidence to determine the at fault driver for reporting purposes.
• Respond to low priority, non-emergency calls for service and criminal activity wherein the suspect is not present and or is unknown.
• Serves as a first responder to provide first aid and assistance to injured individuals.
• Prepares and maintains a wide variety of departmental records and reports in compliance with departmental and legal policies and procedures.
• Provide community members with information on Georgia Statutory Laws, City Ordinances, and general information.
• Maintains assigned Vehicle, Uniforms, and Equipment in accordance with departmental policy and procedures.
• Coordinates and exchanges information with sworn officers, patrol supervisors, detectives, and code enforcement.
• Provide testimony in a court of law and assistance in the prosecution of criminal cases.
• Maintains order in crowds and provides security for public gatherings and scheduled city functions.
• Assists stranded motorists, directs traffic, and keeps the roadways clear of hazards, debris, and abandon vehicles.
• Participates in mandatory departmental training programs.
• Assists the patrol function, to include responding to non-dangerous calls for service, gathering information for reporting purposes, collecting found property for safekeeping, documenting criminal activity, along with collecting, preserving, and packaging evidence to assist in suspect identification and prosecution, and providing scene security for sworn officers on crime scenes and accident scenes.
• Perform administrative duties as required or as assigned.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of the criminal justice system at the municipal, state, and federal levels.
• Knowledge of all aspects of police work, including modern crime prevention, investigation techniques, criminal identification, rules of evidence, traffic control, and record keeping.
• Knowledge of, or the ability to learn the geography of the city and the location of important buildings and areas.
• Skill and ability to orally communicate with others effectively.
• Skill and ability to communicate with others via the written word.
• Skill in the use of personal computers, including the software and applications used to document police reports.
• Skill and ability to think critically and resolve problems by gaining cooperation among competing interest groups.
• Skill and ability to analyze situations and to take quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action while giving consideration to surrounding hazards and circumstances of each situation.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
• The ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with subordinate employees, City officials, citizens and community groups.
• Ability to drive and operate the department's assigned vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
• Ability to work under moderately stressful conditions including inclement weather.
Supervisory Controls:
Work is performed under the general supervision of the assigned higher-ranking officer.
Guidelines:
Guidelines include state and federal laws, traffic laws, local ordinances, and departmental policies and procedures. These guidelines are generalized and may require some interpretation in application. Work requires independent judgment and discretion in difficult or unusual situations.
Complexity of Work:
Work requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of guidelines, policies, standards, and precedents. Work involves minimal personal danger.
Citizen Contacts:
Citizen contacts are typically made to exchange information, provide services, or to resolve problems.
Physical Demands:
The work is typically performed with the employee intermittently sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee must occasionally lift light or heavy objects, use equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, be able to distinguish between shades of color.
Work Environment:
The work is performed indoors, in a vehicle, and outdoors. The employee is exposed to occasional inclement weather, infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and possible life-threatening situations. The work may require the use of personal protective equipment such as masks or gloves.
Supervisory and Management Responsibility:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
