Job Opportunity: Public Works Laborer

Position Summary

The City of Lula is seeking a dependable and hardworking individual to join our Public Works Department as a Public Works Laborer. This is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining City facilities, streets, roads, rights-of-way, and related infrastructure. The Laborer performs a variety of tasks, including general maintenance, groundskeeping, equipment operation, utility support, and assisting with repairs.

This is a full-time position. The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, with overtime as needed for after-hours work, emergencies, or special events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

·        Assist with road construction, repair, and street cleaning.

·        Load and unload materials such as gravel, asphalt, pipe, timber, and equipment.

·        Perform semi-skilled work using hand tools and equipment, including mixing or placing cement and asphalt concrete.

·        Collect and dispose of debris, trash, and materials from work areas.

·        Cut grass and maintain grounds around City buildings, roadsides, and rights-of-way.

·        Operate groundskeeping equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, and chainsaws.

·        Maintain and clean assigned equipment.

·        Read and record water meters accurately.

·        Assist with water line repairs, maintenance, and related utility work.

·        Clean public facilities and parks following City events and rental activities.

·        Remove snow, ice, and/or debris from roads, sidewalks, and facilities after storms.

·        Provide additional support to the Water & Sewer Department as needed.

·        Work evenings, weekends, on-call, or after-hours events when required.

·        Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

·        Knowledge of materials used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities.

·        Ability to operate hand tools, trucks, and light/heavy maintenance equipment.

·        Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

·        Ability to obtain a Georgia Water Distribution Operator license.

·        Ability to perform repetitive tasks, heavy lifting, bending, walking, and physical labor for extended periods.

Certification, License, and Special Requirements

Must hold a valid Georgia Driver’s License.

Physical Demands

This position requires heavy lifting, climbing, bending, crawling, crouching, pulling, pushing, standing, and walking for long periods. The employee must be able to work outside in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, or snow. Dexterity and the ability to use tools and equipment safely are essential.

Work Environment

The Public Works Laborer primarily works outdoors and may be exposed to:

·        Loud noise from equipment and traffic.

·        Dust, dirt, fumes, and other environmental conditions.

·        Hazards associated with working near moving vehicles and heavy equipment.

·        Uneven terrain, ditches, confined spaces, and roadside work zones.

·        Varying weather conditions year-round.

Employees must follow all safety procedures and wear protective gear as required.
