This position is responsible for operating a rear-loading sanitation truck to collect refuse along assigned residential routes. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Public Works Sanitation Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
· Drive a rear-loader and/or side arm loader sanitation truck to collect contents of residential carts on assigned routes throughout the city.
· Participates as needed in refuse collection activities and cleaning of trucks.
· Transports contents to designated landfill.
· Performs routines maintenance checks on trucks and/or performs minor truck maintenance; informs Sanitation Manager of necessary repairs or problems.
· Ensures truck is properly cleaned, serviced, equipped and in proper operating order before leaving on route.
· Performs other related duties as assigned.
High School Diploma or equivalent; and one (1) year of related experience; or equivalent training, education, and/or experience.
Must have an A or B Driver’s License.
· Knowledge of geographical layout of City streets and roads and of assigned truck routes.
· Knowledge of refuse collection procedures and City and County codes pertaining to refuse collections.
· Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to accomplish division objectives.
· Knowledge of traffic laws, rules and the safety precautions necessary to accomplish
· Ability to perform Pre Trip Inspections per DOT.

· Skill in the safe operation of assigned vehicles, even under adverse weather and road conditions.
· Skill in identifying equipment problems and malfunctions.

· Ability to effectively lead and schedule the work of subordinates in the absence of the Sanitation Supervisor.
The work is physical work. The employee is occasionally required to exert up to 50 pounds of force. This position requires the employee to continuously walk, stand, carry, pull, reach, kneel, crawl, sit for extended periods of time, and lift heavy objects.
Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment.
