Job Summary:

This position is distinguished from a Heavy Equipment Operator I by the requirement for advanced experience operating a broad range of road construction and maintenance equipment, including motor graders, skid steers, Gradall trucks, dozers, excavators, loaders, and other specialized equipment used by the Road Department. This position also requires possession of an unrestricted Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Major Duties:

·         Operates a wide variety of heavy equipment safely and efficiently to support road construction, road maintenance, drainage, and grading operations.

·         Operates advanced and specialized equipment, including motor graders, skid steers, Gradall trucks, dozers, excavators, loaders, dump trucks, and other heavy equipment used by the department.

·         Performs finish grading, ditching, slope work, shoulder maintenance, driveway apron installation, and roadway shaping using motor graders, dozers, and other grading equipment.

·         Assists with road construction and reconstruction projects, including grading, drainage improvements, hauling materials, and site preparation.

·         Inspects equipment prior to use to ensure proper operating condition, including checking brakes, mirrors, lights, wipers, belts, hoses, tire pressure, fluid levels, and other components.

·         Cleans, services, and performs minor repairs on equipment.

·         Performs routine maintenance duties such as lubricating, greasing, and checking air, oil, fuel, hydraulic fluid, and other fluid levels.

·         Loads dump trucks and hauls sand, dirt, clay, asphalt, gravel, and other materials to work sites.

·         Assists with traffic control by flagging traffic and setting up work zones.

·         Operates a variety of hand tools and power tools.

·         Locates underground utilities prior to excavation activities.

·         Clears debris from roads and rights-of-way.

·         Hauls equipment and materials to and from work sites.

·         Mows county rights-of-way.

·         Cuts trees and removes or chips storm debris.

·         Patches potholes using asphalt or cold patch materials.

·         Cleans culverts and storm drains.

·         Assists with snow and ice removal operations.

·         Assesses and troubleshoots equipment issues to determine needed repairs.

·         Must be available to assist on-call personnel as needed.

·         Installs driveway pipes and drainage structures.

·         Seals cracks in asphalt surfaces.

·         Performs on-call and after-hours duties as assigned, including responding during inclement weather events, emergencies, and participation in a regular rotational on-call schedule.

·         Performs related duties as necessary to support the efficient operation of the Public Works Department.

Minimum Qualifications:

·         Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.

·         Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.

·         Possession of a valid Unrestricted Class A CDL issued by the State of Georgia.

·         As part of the interview process, applicants may be required to demonstrate proficiency in operating equipment such as a dozer, skid steer, excavator, and/or loader.

Must pass a Background/Reference Check and Pre-Employment Drug Screenings prior to the start of employment.
