Public Works Director


Summary

The purpose of this position is responsible for directing and supervising the City's Public Works operations.

This class formulates long-range goals for the organization, develop policy and position papers and negotiates with the chief administrative officer and/or elected officials.

Essential Functions

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

·         Supervise, direct, and evaluate assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.

·         Coordinate, assign and review work and establish work schedules; maintain standards; monitor status of work in progress; inspect completed work assignments; answer questions; gives advice and direction as needed.

·         Plan, organize and implement departmental goals and objectives; coordinate and integrate all activities towards achievement of such goals; develop and implement departmental policies and procedures.

·         Manage and supervise major construction projects and maintenance activities of all public infrastructure; provide technical guidance and expertise to engineers and other professionals; ensure compliance with plans and specifications and all applicable standards.

·         Participate in design, development, construction and / or implementation of complex city-wide projects and programs; provide input for projects designs and schedules, review reports and designs from consultants

·         Inspect work upon completion to ensure conformance to prescribed standards and ensure environmental safety.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

·         Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Public Administration or closely related field.

·         Required six (6) years of progressively responsible supervisory experience with strong diversified public works background; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Physical Demands:

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

·         Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

·         Prefers Licensed Professional Engineer

·         Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
