Job Announcement – Public Works Laborer

Position Title: Public Works Laborer

Department: Public Works

FLSA Status: Non Exempt

Starting Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 (commensurate with experience)

 

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Public Works Director, this position performs unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and construction of streets, sewers, storm drains, parks, and other public works infrastructure. Duties include manual labor, grounds maintenance, operation of public works equipment, utility maintenance, traffic control, and general maintenance activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operate mowers, tractors, weed-eaters, and other equipment for grounds maintenance activities.

Clean and maintain city-owned parks, buildings, and facilities.

Collect and dispose of garbage and debris in accordance with established procedures.

Deliver and pick up trash containers for residential and commercial customers.

Prepare streets for patching and resurfacing using asphalt, concrete, gravel, and related materials.

Assist with construction and maintenance projects including retaining walls, curbs, gutters, guardrails, and catch basins.

Operate equipment such as bobcats, backhoes, tractors, dump trucks, and other city vehicles.

Use hand tools and power tools in construction, repair, and maintenance activities.

Assist in fabricating and installing traffic and street signs.

Perform routine maintenance and inspections of equipment and vehicles.

Assist with building maintenance and repairs as needed.

Set up and maintain safe work zones including cones, signs, and flagging operations.

Paint and stripe streets, curbs, and pavement markings.

Clean, maintain, repair, and install water and sewer lines.

Operate flushing and rodding equipment under supervision.

Install and inspect water meters and hydrant meters.

Read water meters and report irregularities or unauthorized connections.

Maintain manholes, meter pits, and pump stations.

Respond to emergencies and work overtime as required.

Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Experience in public works, construction or utilities related experience preferred.

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor in various weather conditions.

  • Ability to operate hand and power tools safely.

  • Valid Georgia driver’s license required.

  • Ability to follow instructions and work with the public.

  • Ability to work under stress and in emergency situations.

 

Additional Requirements

Must obtain within 24 months: Class F license, confined space certification, First Aid/CPR, certified flagger certification and Georgia NPDES Level 1B Certification.. Position requires participation in on-call rotation and emergency response.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and involves physical labor including lifting, standing, walking, operating equipment, and working around machinery, trenches, and utility infrastructure. Position may require weekend, holiday, evening, and emergency response work.
