JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws and the protection of life and property.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
· Patrols the city to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations and to provide assistance as needed; monitors commercial and residential areas for signs of criminal activity.
· Enforces traffic and parking laws through the issuance of citations and warnings; inspects roadways, bridges, and traffic signal and signs to identify and report hazardous conditions.
· Performs business, residential, and government facility security checks; checks doors, windows, gages and fences; reports unsecured or damaged property.
· Responds to calls relayed by communications officers, including domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, traffic accidents, lost or missing persons searches, public service requests, stranded motorists, and others.
· Conducts preliminary investigations into traffic accidents and other incidents, including interviewing victims, complainants and witnesses, gathering information and evidence, and securing crime scenes.
· Apprehends, arrests, and processes offenders, including fugitives; subpoenas witnesses.
· Provides assistance and backup support to other officers and emergency service providers as necessary.
· Provides traffic direction as needed for events such as parades, funerals, events, and school crossings.
· Testifies in judicial proceedings as necessary; must be able to render creditable testimony in a court of law.
· Completes all required reports and forms, including accident and incident reports.
· Inspects and maintains assigned patrol car, uniform, and equipment.
· Prepares criminal and search warrants, complaints, and affidavits; serves criminal and court-related paperwork.
· Performs specialized duties as assigned, including those of a Field Training Officer (FTO).
· Performs related duties.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF K9 OFFICER
In addition to the above functions, the following is also required of the department’s K9 officers.
· Charged with the deployment of a police canine; shall be specially trained in the use, application, and handling of police canines, as determined by the Chief of Police.
· Assisting detectives and patrol officers in executing search warrants by locating concealed contraband and drugs.
· Locating fleeing suspects, discarded articles, evidence, or missing persons.
· Conducting canine “sniffs” of vehicles suspected of carrying illegal drugs or contraband.
· Proactively developing criminal cases of their own, with special attention to the enforcement of traffic and controlled substance laws.
· Participating in department-sponsored educational programs at local schools and assisting with ongoing programs, such as DARE or similar drug awareness programs.
· Maintain required training hours, documentation of said training, and deployment events.
· Assist the Special Response Team (S.R.T.) in any high-risk operation.
· Performing other duties as designated by the K9 Supervisor or the Chief of Police.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER
· Serve as a sworn law enforcement officer assigned to a school campus to provide a safe and secure learning environment for students, staff, and visitors.
· Enforce federal, state, and local laws, as well as applicable school district policies, while exercising discretion appropriate to a school setting.
· Build positive relationships with students, faculty, administrators, parents, and community partners to promote trust and cooperation.
· Respond to incidents occurring on school property, including criminal offenses, disturbances, emergencies, and safety concerns.
· Investigate criminal and non-criminal incidents involving students, staff, or visitors; prepare detailed and accurate reports.
· Take appropriate enforcement action, including warnings, referrals, citations, or arrests, in accordance with law, department policy, and juvenile justice procedures.
· Serve as a visible presence on campus to deter criminal activity and enhance student and staff safety.
· Collaborate with school administrators on threat assessments, safety planning, and emergency response procedures.
· Assist in the development and implementation of school safety plans, including lockdown, evacuation, and emergency drills.
· Provide guidance and informal counseling to students when appropriate and refer students to school or community resources as needed.
· Deliver classroom presentations and educational programs on topics such as law-related education, drug and alcohol awareness, internet safety, and crime prevention.
· Monitor and address truancy, bullying, harassment, and other school-related issues in coordination with school officials.
· Maintain confidentiality of student information in compliance with applicable laws and policies.
· Participate in meetings with school officials, parents, and multidisciplinary teams regarding student safety and behavioral concerns.
· Maintain required training and certifications related to school-based policing, juvenile law, and crisis intervention.
· Testify in judicial and administrative proceedings as required.
· Attend departmental meetings, school meetings, and training sessions as assigned.
· Perform related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF CRIME SUPPRESSION UNIT
· Conduct undercover vice operations.
· Conduct follow-up investigations on criminal intelligence tips.
· Develop confidential informants and properly manage informants.
· Conduct criminal interdiction traffic stops
· Complete operation plans and briefs to ensure tactically sound execution of search warrants. Complete applicable after-action reports.
· Network with other intelligence units in the regional area to include resources on the State and Federal level.
· Knowledge of drug and interdiction-related laws and case law.
· Knowledge of processes involving search warrants and subpoenas.
· Tactical knowledge on conducting high-risk traffic stops and location-based search warrants.
· Knowledge of local organized retail crime and gang-related crime trends
· Knowledge of conducting drug, organized retail crime, gang, identity fraud, and general vice investigations.
· Knowledge of the various forensic tools, software, and programs used to help facilitate investigations.
· Knowledge of asset forfeiture policy and applicable laws and best practices. Oversee asset forfeiture case preparation.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
· Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, criminal and traffic codes, search and seizure laws, town ordinances, and department policies and procedures.
· Knowledge of traffic accident investigation techniques and procedures.
· Knowledge of the geography and streets of the town.
· Knowledge of the court system and judicial procedures.

· Skill in operating police vehicles, firearms, and emergency equipment.
· Skill in operating radios and communications equipment.
· Skill in operating radar equipment.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Police Sergeant assigns work in terms of general instructions. Work is reviewed for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include state and federal laws, traffic laws, city ordinances, court rulings, constitutional guidelines, training manuals, and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
· The work consists of related law enforcement duties. The varied nature of calls and the potential for emergencies contribute to the complexity of the work.
· The purpose of this position is to protect life and property and enforce federal, state, and local laws. Successful performance contributes to the detection and deterrence of crime and to the protection of life and property.

· Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, other emergency service providers, court system personnel, attorneys, judges, medical personnel, law enforcement officers from other agencies, and the general public.
· Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, provide services, interview persons, and resolve problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
· The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee must occasionally lift light or heavy objects, use equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguish between shades of color, and use the physical force necessary to arrest and restrain persons.
· The work is performed indoors, in a vehicle, and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to inclement weather, infectious diseases, and life-threatening situations. The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
· High school diploma or equivalent.
· 1-2 years of sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship.
· Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
· Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Police Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia.
